Timeless Architectural Beauty with Modern Lightweight Technology

Columns have represented strength, elegance, balance, and prestige for centuries. From classical architecture to today’s luxury homes, hotels, churches, resorts, and commercial buildings, columns continue to play a major role in creating beautiful architectural spaces.

At Decorative Architectural Shapes, we combine traditional architectural design with modern lightweight manufacturing technology to create decorative architectural columns, capitals, and bases that are durable, elegant, and easy to install.

Our products are manufactured using EPS foam combined with durable hardcoat finishes, making them lightweight, weather resistant, and suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Non-Structural Wrap-Around Column Systems

Unlike traditional concrete or stone columns, Decorative Architectural Shapes columns are non-structural decorative products.

These columns are designed to wrap around existing structural supports such as steel posts, concrete columns, wood framing, and other load-bearing members. The actual structural support comes from the internal framing or post. The Decorative Architectural Shapes system provides the finished architectural appearance.

One of the biggest advantages of our products is that the columns, capitals, and bases are manufactured in halves as wrap-around systems. This allows installers to place the two halves around the existing support structure and secure them together quickly and efficiently on-site.

Compared to traditional masonry or precast concrete systems, Decorative Architectural Shapes products are lightweight, easier to transport, faster to install, more cost effective, easier to customize, and less labor intensive.

CNC-Cut EPS Foam Column Shafts

Decorative Architectural Shapes column shafts are not molded. The shafts are CNC-cut with hot strings from EPS foam blocks. This process allows us to create highly accurate architectural shapes with consistency and precision.

Using CNC hot-wire string cutting, we fabricate round columns, square columns, fluted columns, tapered columns, smooth shaft columns, oversized columns, and custom straight architectural profiles. Spiral columns require different equipment and are not part of our current fabrication process.

The molded pieces are typically the decorative capitals and certain ornamental components. For example, highly decorative Corinthian capitals with ornamental leaves and classical detailing are molded in order to preserve sharp lines and fine architectural detail.

Types of Columns

  • Round columns are extremely popular for Mediterranean, classical, colonial, and luxury residential architecture because they create elegance and softness in entryways, balconies, patios, and porticos.
  • Square columns are commonly used in contemporary, craftsman, and transitional architectural styles and provide a cleaner, more modern appearance.
  • Fluted columns feature vertical grooves running along the shaft. These grooves create depth, shadow lines, and refined classical character.
  • Tapered columns gradually narrow toward the top of the shaft, creating a taller and more graceful visual appearance.
  • Smooth shaft columns provide a simple and clean architectural style for projects requiring understated elegance.

Custom Cutouts & Fabrication

Decorative Architectural Shapes can fabricate custom cutouts for beams, arches, ceilings, soffits, decorative trim, lighting, structural brackets, and special architectural conditions.

Because the columns are CNC fabricated, custom dimensions and project-specific details can be produced with excellent accuracy.

Column Capitals

The capital is the top portion of the column that transitions between the shaft and the structure above.

  • Doric capitals are simple, bold, and timeless. They provide a strong architectural appearance without excessive decoration.
  • Ionic capitals are more decorative and are recognized by their scroll-style design.
  • Corinthian capitals are the most ornate style, featuring decorative leaves and rich classical detailing that create a luxury architectural appearance.
  • Tuscan capitals provide a cleaner and more minimalist appearance, making them ideal for transitional and contemporary applications.

Decorative Architectural Shapes also manufactures additional custom styles including Scamozzi capitals, Temple of the Winds capitals, and custom architectural profiles.

Column Bases

The base is the bottom portion of the column system. Bases create the transition between the shaft and the floor or pedestal surface while visually anchoring the column.
Just like the column shafts and capitals, the bases are manufactured as wrap-around pieces in halves for easy installation around existing structural supports.

Hardcoat Finishes & Surface Textures

Decorative Architectural Shapes architectural products are manufactured using EPS foam combined with durable hardcoat coatings and multiple texture options.

One of the most popular finishes is the Fine Sand finish. This texture creates an appearance similar to precast concrete, stucco, or natural stone while maintaining the lightweight advantages of foam construction.

Decorative Architectural Shapes also offers Orange Peel textures, smooth hardcoat surfaces, primed products, and fully painted finishes depending on project specifications. Some customers prefer products ready for field painting, while others request completed architectural finishes directly from production.

Why Decorative Architectural Shapes Does Not Sand Fluted Columns or Corinthian Capitals

Decorative Architectural Shapes products are CNC-cut EPS foam architectural products with hardcoat finishes — not hand-carved stone products. Because of this, Decorative Architectural Shapes does not sand the columns, especially fluted shafts or ornate Corinthian capitals.

Sanding detailed architectural profiles could damage flutes, grooves, decorative leaves, ornamental details, and sharp architectural lines. Instead, the hardcoat finish is applied in a way that preserves the sharpness and integrity of the architectural detailing while still providing a durable finished surface.

Measurements Required for Fabrication

Accurate measurements are extremely important when fabricating custom architectural columns. Before production begins, Decorative Architectural Shapes requires several key dimensions and specifications.

These include:

  • Column diameter or width;
  • Overall shaft height;
  • Cutout size or inside clearance dimensions;
  • Structural support dimensions;
  • Capital and base style selection.

Because these are wrap-around decorative systems, accurate measurements are essential to ensure proper fitment, clean seam alignment, faster installation, reduced field modifications, and correct architectural proportions.

Lightweight Architectural Solutions for Modern Construction

Decorative Architectural Shapes combines timeless architectural beauty with modern manufacturing efficiency.

Our lightweight EPS foam architectural systems provide the appearance of traditional stone, concrete, or precast architecture while offering easier installation, reduced labor, lower transportation costs, faster production, and greater design flexibility.

Whether for luxury homes, hotels, churches, commercial facades, entryways, patios, balconies, or custom architectural projects, Decorative Architectural Shapes columns, capitals, and bases help create elegant spaces with lasting visual impact.
